Raw power from Italy performs in pomona!

Raw power was nice enough to stop by the pit pomona to perform a few songs for the grateful fans!
Raw Power was formed in Italy in 1981 by Mauro and Giuseppe Codeluppi (voice and guitar).
The vinyl debut You Are the Victim (Meccano, 1983) made them a name for playing the roughest punk in in their home country.
Screams from the Gutter (Toxic Shock, 1985) is most likely their best album and a masterpiece of hardcore-metal crossover. Far from inventing a style this record is remarkable for ranking a brilliant range of riffs (all composed by guitarrist Giuseppe Codeluppi) and for being recorded by excellent musicians. Jazz drummer Helder Stefanini, metal guitarrist Davide Devoti and obsessed vocalist Mauro Codeluppi manage to define a sound which is outstanding in the punk scene. State Oppression, Hate and Power are the most famous songs, but the standouts are the thrilling A Certain Kind of Killer, the improvised jam Start a Fight, the fast and furious Police Police and the well structured Politicians. Wop Hour (Toxic Shock, 1986) is a live ep collecting out-takes from the Screams' sessions. big thanks to Raw power for coming out!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) October 5, 2010 --
Henry Turner Jr., CEO of Louisiana-based Hit City Records, has inked a new digital music Distribution deal with Savvy Muzik. With the agreement in place, Savvy Muzik will now begin international distribution of artists recording on the Hit City label. The deal will cover many stores and a new music catalog will be available worldwide through Savvy Musik.

“The signing of this agreement is an incredible opportunity for the talented artists who record on the Hit City label,” Turner says. “We will be able to expand our ability to promote our artists and provide an international platform for people all over the world to hear our music.”

Turner honed his music and management skills through playing in cover bands and on studio recordings. His early musical influences came from blues and jazz greats B.B. King, George Benson, as well as the hypnotic mellow reggae tones of Bob Marley.

In the 1980’s, he put his musician career on hold to work at various record labels. He eventually founded Hit City Records, an independent musician management and promotion company. His experiences with the Indie music scene eventually inspired him to put a new band together, “Flavor”. Along with managing Hit City Records, he’s now back onstage. Writing music and performing as lead vocalist and guitarist with “Flavor”, Turner is a pioneer in developing the new musical genre, Louisiana Reggae Soul and Funk.

Recently, one of the songs recorded with Turner’s first band, The Crystals; “Giving My Love to You,” was featured on the popular television show, “Chuck.”

SavvyMuzik is an Australian company that specializes in international distribution of independent music artists and labels. SavvyMuzik has nationally and internationally. They focus not so much on genre but on the quality of the products they distribute and license via their worldwide distribution and licensing network. SavvyMuzik is engaged in the development and promotion of artists that have the musical ability and desire to have their music heard by an international audience.

Basco family at the museum of tollerance

The Basco family takes the museum of tolerance by storm.  Celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, the Basco family hosted a variety of poets from their poetry group DPL (dead poetry lounge) with special readings by Arianna Basco, and Dante Basco.  The days program also included Nonosina’s Polynesian dance, martial arts demonstration from the Muay Thai School USA, music from Dj  Icy Ice from power 106fm, Viva La Vida Dance Company, and a special performance by Miss Wheelchair California 2010 Jennifer Kumiyama. Also skits from comedy groups OPM, and the sketch comedy show. Also special guest  emcees  for the event included actress Amy Hill (King of the Hill, American Dad, )  and actor  Brian Tee.(The fast and the furious 3  Tokyo  Drift)
The entire Basco family is filled with talented Poets, musicians, and actors.  I had the pleasure of meeting most of them Sunday at the Museum of Tolerance. I was able to hear poetry readings, talk with Dante Basco,(actor) and  see a performance from Arianna and the Basco brothers (Darion, Dante,Derek, and Dionysio).  The Basco Brothers are known as being the first Asian-American entertainment family doing anything from singing to Rhyming.  The whole program was an exciting experience, and I’m looking forward to seeing the Basco Family in the future.

UCLA Jazz & Reggae Fest

By Shalana Dennis

A great way to spend Memorial Day weekend, the 2010 UCLA Jazz and Reggae festival was a two day celebration with top notch artists like Raphael Saadiq, Q tip, The foreign exchange, Bilal, Nas, Damian Marley, Barrington Levy, Cham, Tizzy, and Etana. This parade of renowned artists were accompanied by our local LA band Detour Posse.
Pulling over 30,000 attendees and packed by mid afternoon, the UCLA Jazz and Reggae festival has gained notoriety in the community of music lovers for its picnic-style seating, amazing musical performances, international food court, and diverse vendor booths selling anything from food, to clothing, jewelry, and imported items from Africa and the diasporas adding a sense of belonging and participation.
Veteran Dance-Hall Artist Barrington Levy gave an electrifying performance, doing all the famous hits that his fans love. Etana had the crowd singing along as she danced across the stage, while Cham had the whole crowd dancing and singing along.
Headliners Damian Marley and NAS, performed songs from their new collaboration album called Distant Relatives. The two music Icons worked really well together, making a Reggae-Hip Hop sound that meshed well together and came off strong. It is not the first time they have worked together however, NAS appeared on a track off of Damian Marley’s album Welcome to Jamrock in the song “Road to Zion” which won two Grammy awards. I truly believe they were the highlight of the show, and I’m looking forward to seeing what acts UCLA puts together next year!
